Can I get some suggestions on how to measure how much oil I need in my turkey fryer?

I know you measure with water in the fryer but do I put the turkey in the water frozen? Will that give an accurate measurement? Do I take the turkey out of the wrapping and stick it in the water? Will that ruin the turkey by getting water all in it? What do I do?
HELLOOOO! I know not to put a turkey in a fryer frozen. I’m trying to measure how much oil I need today before I cook it tomorrow. This would require me to put some water in the fryer, put my semi frozen turkey in the water, and mark on the fryer how far the water goes up. This will tell me how much oil I need. However, I wasn’t sure if this was an accurate way to do it. My husband suggested we wait until the turkey thaws out, unwrap it, and stick it in the water. I thought this might ruin the turkey being in all that water. That’s my question. Is the prior way we did it accurate, or should we unwrap it and put it in the water thawed out? Will this ruin the turkey?

Do NOT put the turkey in the fryer frozen. It will cause an explosive reaction. If you leave the turkey in its wrapper to measure how much oil to use in your fryer, it shouldn’t affect the turkey. Leave the turkey in its bag until it’s completely thawed. That way you can put it in a lukewarm water bath to finish thawing it, if it’s still frozen.

Be sure and have a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires standing by. Also, keep the propane tank as far away from the fryer as possible. Do not place the fryer near flammable objects, including fence lines, or resinous yards plants such as evergreens.

Edit: Also, If the turkey is a little big, you might want to cut the front breast bone to make it more flexible. You will probably need a pair of bolt cutters to do this. Personal experience…

If your turkey is still frozen! You have problems! surely you are not thinking of dunking a frozen turkey in the deep fryer, now?

if the turkey is thawed, (keep it wrapped) you can use water to gauge how much oil you will need in the deep fryer!

The turkey has to be thawed out first.

The fryer should have come with a manual.

Read the instructions that came with your fryer. They should tell you the correct amount of oil.
